Who is here?
International teachers who come to teach in China come from all over the world and they come for a variety of reasons. One of the primary reasons to work in China is to get solid teaching experience, to save money, and to have a unique working experience.
The cost of living is extremely low here in China, and with accommodation, one round trip airfare per year, and food covered, a BC teacher is able to save money especially if they are vigilant about the money they do spend. Many come here and really explore and travel, and even that is cheap. If one lives simply, one is able to really tuck away a few dollars. Many of the teachers send a good deal of money home (to themselves) at the end of each school year.
George and Kat Doc have been here for seven years. They hail all the way from South Africa. George retired from his teaching profession in South Africa and they began their bucket list. They work during the year and then travel to Japan, Korea, Cambodia just to name a few places. These form much of the foundation of the school, as they have been here the longest. George organizes the newbies ensuring everything is in order from the living arrangement to lesson plans and resources. Kat teaches Kindergarten here, and it is her obvious calling. She has the energy of a Tasmanian devil and is absolutely brilliant with the young kids.
Jackie is a Canadian teacher from across the water. Hailing all the way from Comox, BC, she is a spirited new teacher who is smart and dynamic and is over here to work, save a few pennies, while using Beijing as the hub for her travel. Already in the past few years, she has taken the opportunity to travel to the Philippines.
The International teachers form a small family community of their own, which is helpful and comforting. Each week, we go out together to a restaurant or pub, or explore some part of the city. It’s nice to know there is a community that you can be part of right away. You don’t have to drink in order to be part of the ex pat community, but it helps.
