About Shannon Behan
Hi! I have been working in public, private and international education in British Columbia for the past twenty-five years. I received my undergraduate degree and teacher’s certificate from University of Victoria, my Masters Degree from the University of Calgary, and my Doctorate in Education Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Kansas.
I was born into a large Irish Catholic family, where there was a fundamental and core understanding that education and learning is a lifelong venture, that hard work matters and building community is a precious gift. In my teen years, I was fortunate to spend a year in Northern Lapland on the edge of the Arctic Circle in the city of Rovaniemi, Finland. It was there that I learned to speak Finnish, attended High school, and made lifelong friendships.
After graduating from University of Victoria, my first teaching experience was in Taiwan. Following this, I returned to British Columbia, and spent the next twenty-five years working as a teacher, a counsellor and as an administrator in elementary, middle and high schools. Most recently, I worked as a Principal in a British Columbia Offshore School in Beijing, China, and as a District Principal in School District #47. While working in various cities in China, I have also been the driving force behind expanding program offerings for international students in School District #47, Powell River including opening a satellite campus in the historic neighbourhood of Gastown Vancouver, B.C.
I am currently working as President of the British Columbia Principals’ & Vice Principals’ Association.
